Vineyard Biodynamics and Virgin Deer Stomachs: Whaaat???

“I have no idea how it works but it does,” is a common refrain in discussions of biodynamic agriculture.  I have known a number of biodynamic farmers and they were all smart, educated growers and not one of them was known to dance in the vineyards on lunar holidays. They did their best to grow good fruit, protect the earth and create ecosystems in their vineyards - who can argue with that?  The photos in Nicolas Joly’s book on biodynamic farming makes a case for why chemical fertilizers can wreak havoc with root systems, but too often, “I don’t know why it works but it does” is the answer to biodynamic methodology.

And then this quote from an Argentinian grower in an article in the Drinks Business, “We use preps like virgin deer stomach in the vineyard. I have no idea how it works but it does.” Com’on, virgin deer stomach?  A google search of “virgin deer stomach” turns up nothing but references to the original article, and this comment which is worth repeating, “Slutty dear stomachs never work right.”
